Great Barrier Reef Photo Competition – Entry Form


1. Best of World – Your best images from around the world.
2. Creative – Your best creative images from around the world (PS manipulation allowed).
3. Compact Macro – Close up using compact camera system.
4. Compact Wide – Wide Angle using a compact camera system.
5. Wide Angle Nature – Celebrating the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea
6. Macro – Celebrating the little guys.
7. Diver(s) – Scuba divers & Snorkelers in harmony with the reef
8. Young Photographer ($10.00 per image) – An opportunity for under 16′s to show off best underwater photos.


1. This competition is open to all underwater photographers except for board members and judges of the Cairns Underwater Film Festival.
2. The images must have been taken underwater (over-unders accepted).
3. All images must have been taken in the last two years.
4. The Best of World and Creative category images can be taken anywhere in the world all other images must have been taken in the Great Barrier Reef or Coral Sea (Australia) region.
5. Creative category images can be in the ocean, freshwater lakes, rivers or pools.
6. Entries must not have won a major prize (valued over AUD$200) in any competition.
7. Marine life should never be stressed or endangered for the sake of a photo. Conservation rules will apply to all entries. Entries suspected of exhibiting the following behavior will be disqualified:
a. Divers visibly damaging the environment.
b. Animals with signs of stress (e.g. puffed puffers, inking octopus).
c. Animals moved to an unnatural environment or risky location.
8. Only images in digital format are accepted (High resolution JPEG).
9. A ‘Compact’ camera system for the purpose of this competition is any camera that does not have interchangeable lenses. DSLR and mirror-less cameras with interchangeable lenses cannot enter this category.
10. An image taken outside Australia can only be entered into the Best of World category and Creative categories.
11. A maximum of three (3) images can be entered per category.
12. The same image cannot be entered into multiple categories.
13. By entering an image in this competition the entrant agrees:
a. the image, in its entirety, is a single work of original material taken by the entrant.
b. the entrant has all rights over the image(s).
14. Normal enhancements which include sharpness, contrast, saturation and removal of backscatter are allowed. Image manipulation including, but not limited to, composites (images produced from 2 or more photographic elements), cloning, image removal, watermarks and frames, are NOT allowed, except in Category 2 Creative.
15. The judging panel is composed of independent professional underwater photographers.
16. The judge’s decision is final, no correspondence shall be entered into.
17. Submission of images in the Great Barrier Reef Photo and Video Competition implies you have read, understood and accepted the competition rules.
18. Finalists maybe asked to provide raw files to validate EXIF data and non-manipulation in Categories excluding Creative.
19. A prize will be awarded to the winner and runner up of each category.
20. The top 15 entries in each category will be displayed on the website post event.
21. Prizes are not transferable or redeemable as cash.
22. Winners will be announced and awards presented on the night of the Cairns Underwater Film Festival held at the Cairns Civic Theatre Saturday 23rd August 2014.
23. Finalists will be contacted by Saturday 9th August 2014.
24. Winning and runner up images of each category will be screened at the Festival. Additional entries may also be shown at the festival.
25. The photographer agrees that their images can be used in association with the promotion of the Cairns Underwater Film Festival. When used for promotional purposes the photographers name will be mentioned.

-a. Fee for Best of World, Creative and Young Photographer is $10 per image.
-b. Fee for entry to any other categories is $45, which enables you to enter up to 3 images in all categories you qualify for.
3. Once payment is complete you will receive a ‘confirmation of registration’ email containing the web address for uploading your entries. The preferred method of entry is electronic. If this method is not possible due to your lack of a proper internet connection, you will be able to submit images on CD by contacting the Photo Competition Coordinator at:
4. Images should be sized 2000 pixels on their longest dimension and a maximum file size of 5MB. For correct colour reproduction we recommend participants use the Adobe RGB 1998 colour space.
5. Each images digital file must be named using the following format:
Name of entrant_category_photo number
E.g. John-Citizen_MACRO_1
Which are 8 images entered by John Citizen.
